Every islander may own two sheep. For much of the year, the creatures wander the northern meadows, hills, and cliffs, but before Christmas, they're gathered and taken to shearing areas. Men begin early, spending extensive hours shearing maximum numbers. The following day, families assist: women provide meals and beverages and help with remaining sheep, while children play or attempt to capture young lambs.
